November 2006 Newsletter The end of the year is fast approaching and no one has yet stepped up to be the Vice Commodore or Social Coordinator for next year. These jobs are just not that hard. I am sure that any of the member's of NYRA can do them with no problem. The people currently in those positions have done their fair share of work and it is time for others to help out if you want NYRA to continue to function. Don't be shy, step forward to keep your club and Neuse racing alive. Elections will be held on Dec 16 at the social at Mike and Joy Evans home. Winter Series racing started with the Halloween Regatta. The racing was challenging with winds that averaged 20 to 30 kts and gusts into the low 40s. Note that for the rest of the Winter Series, if we have conditions like this again, per the Sailing Instructions, the race will be cancelled. Due to the high winds, there was lots of excitement on the river. Almost every boat spun out at least once, and a spinnaker boat or two put on some great shows with high speed broaches. Congratulations to Craig Wright and the crew on After Thought for winning the spinnaker class and to Terbitha for winning the non-spinnaker class. Leigh and Dave Pfefferkorn hosted the Halloween party after the race. There were some very good costumes, food and a good time had by all. I wore my trusty Hawaiian shirt and went as a retiring commodore. The standings for the Winter Series have been updated to reflect the first day of racing. The first 3 places are only separated by 1 point. In case anyone missed it at the Winter Series skipper's meeting, the RC for the next 5 races is: Cotton Picker is a backup in case someone cannot make their date and it is the responsibly of the scheduled skipper to coordinate with the Charles Douthit.
