Cotton Picker at the 2004 Blackbeard Regatta

It is a very busy fall with sailing season and football season colliding, and it is good to see so many boats on the water. Since I last wrote a Commodore's letter we have had the Oriental Cup, Blackbeard's Regatta, NYRA Women's Regatta, Neuse Solo and the PSC Hospice Regatta with a good representation of NYRA boats and crew in all of them. I can provide first hand knowledge of two of these events; football season got in the way of the others. At the NYRA Women's race, 9 boats started in 2 classes and had some competitive racing in ideal conditions. Orion won the Spinnaker class and Quixotic won the non-spinnaker class. We also had a great dinner and band afterwards. Kudos too Missy Baskerville for organizing this event.

Two NYRA boats ventured north to the Pamilco River for the PSC Hospice Cup. PSC did a great job with the shore based activities, including one of the better pig pickings that I have been to, and with the racing. In addition, they pulled the right strings and managed to have great weather for racing and an after-race swim for those with an adventurous spirit. Eddy Parker's Brown Eyed Girl took third place against a very competitive spinnaker fleet. Next year we are considering making this the third ICRC race and it is planned to be scheduled concurrent with Bath's 300th anniversary. Based on the competition and festivities this year, I highly recommend that you consider this race for next year.

I did not make it to the Oriental Cup, Blackbeard's Cup or Neuse Solo so if any one else would like to provide a write-up it will be appreciated.

We are considering a few changes for Boat of the Year (BOTY) for next year and any input will be appreciated. Among the changes under consideration are adding one or two more races to get back to ten events for the series and clarifying how one-design
races should be handled in the scoring. We plan to have the rules and races for next year's BOTY finalized and published by the end of this year.
