Winners of the 2004 Oar Race

August, and thus our month break from racing, is over now and time to get ready for a busy fall schedule. The Oar Regatta (see results and an article about it later in this letter) reflected either a lot of pent up demand to get out on the water or just that everyone was tired of mowing the grass and dodging hurricanes. NYRA was represented by 10 to 15 boats in the Oar Regatta. Hopefully we will see a similar turnout for the Blackbeards Regatta (Sept 11 and 12) and Oriental Cup (Sept 18).

Those of you that rested up in August missed a fun double handed race when New York Times, Brown Eyed Girl and Compass Rose all chased each other around the upper Neuse. For some reason only Brown Eyed Girl realized that it was a spinnaker race (or we cheated) and managed to get around the course first. New York Times and Compass Rose both developed a modified pursuit format (or they cheated) and applied their time correction in mid race by not going all the way to the leeward mark. Overall, it was a great way to spend a cloudy Sunday afternoon when no one else was out on the river.

Current BOTY rules and standings are on the NYRA web page. Please check and let us know if there at any errors in the results that have been compiled. Also, I have heard numerous discussions on ways to improve the BOTY rules. We will consider modifying the rules for next year and everyone's input is welcome on the rules as well as the slate of BOTY races. On Sept 30 we will be holding the next NYRA board meeting. If anyone has any suggestions to improve NYRA or get more boats racing, please let a member of the board know.

Don't forget about the NYRA Women's Regatta in Oriental on Sept 25. Race if you can, if you are not allowed to race, consider supporting the women by going to the dinner and band after the race at the Oriental Motel.

The Pamilco Sailing Club is sponsoring the Hospice Regatta on Oct 2. This race had a good turnout last year and I hope to see many of you there again this year. Not only should we try to support other races in the area, but the winner of this race gets an expense paid trip to Annapolis to race in the Hospice National Championship on J-105s.
