May has been a busy month of racing for NYRA and our members. NYRA hosted the Women's Regatta in Oriental. This was a makeup race for the 2003 Women's Regatta that was delayed due to hurricane Isabel. the same weekend we hosted the NYRA Invitational. Mike Afflerbach was the PRO for these 2 events and will provide details in another article in this news letter.
Further a sea, NYRA was represented in the Wilmington
Group Race (formerly the Wachovia Cup) from Wrightsville Beach to Beaufort
and the NCYRA Regatta off of Atlantic Beach. Water Phantom participated
in the WGR with 5 of 6 crew members
from NYRA (Charlie Nelson, Mike Foster, Paul Lockwood, Larry Gupton, and
Lee King). We had a great 68 mile spinnaker run from Wrightsville Beach
to Beaufort with SW winds at 20 to 25 kts and 4 to 5 foot seas. Water
Phantom averaged better than 7 kts with an occasional surf to better than
10 kts. We "completed" the race in just under 10 hours, however,
in the confused seas going into Beaufort Channel at 10 PM, we missed the
final mark and received a DQ. Still, it was a great way to spend a Thursday
afternoon.
