San Juan 21 Eastern Nationals, Lake Norman

Twenty-three San Juans in 2 classes fought it out for the 2004 honors at Lake Norman, NC in May. With 17 "Working Class" and 6 "Spinnaker" boats, the lake was alive with sailors as the racing started on Friday and continued into Sat.
With light to medium winds both days, the racing settled into a match of who had the shift and who didn't, as "Lake" sailing is all about wind shifts.

Our own Jeff Thomas with Missy Baskerville represented us well with a solid Third place in working sails, while Mike Evans with Mark W. pulled out a 2nd place finish in Spinnaker Class in a very competitive field of racers. Evans 2nd place was a lot closer than the scoring indicates as several races saw the 1st and 2nd place boats "overlaped" at the finish line.

The weather couldn't have been any better all weekend and the Lake Norman club really put on a great Regatta with all the food and activities.

Ken Gurganus and Mike Harrison battled a tree to a draw at the launch ramp before the racing. Depending on who you talked to, the "tree" or "The Driver" got the better of it. Ken and Mike had a "Great Time" racing, despite the scoring. Mike Foster and Gary Peterson also represented this area in the "Spinnaker Class".
This is what the San Juan 21 is all about "Road Trip" and other venues.
