NYRA Invitational a Close Race to the Finish

It was a beautiful Sunday and we had 8 sailboats out for a race on May 23, 2004. After a fun 2003 Women’s Regatta (a makeup due to Isabel’s arrival last year) on Saturday, we had 2 races with great conditions in the Oriental area near Garbacon and 1 Adams Creek.

The race committee boat consisted of Mike Afflerbach, Bill Jarvis, and Laura Lloyd. We decided to put together at least 2 races with the idea of getting everyone off the water by 2 pm so everyone could get home by a reasonable hour. We ended up doing a quick windward-leeward and followed up by a longer double windward-leeward to test sailing skills. I want to personally thank Bill Jarvis for all of his help throughout the weekend and for the use of his boat Piccolo as RC boat. As always, it was a joy to have Laura aboard to help keep things running smoothly. I’d also like to thank Ron Turner for graciously volunteering his boat for a mark and chase boat, and to Larry Gupton and Tim Seaver for manning the chase boat (and moving marks when we had wind shift).

In both non-spinnaker class races, we had a extremely close spread in the finish times between all the non-spinnaker boats, as well as some exciting class racing within the non-spinnaker class: the two San Juan’s duked it out over an extremely close match race all day. Congratulations goes to skipper Margaret Alexander and Luann Parris who sailed Orion into two bullets, winning the non-spinnaker class (even after winning the Women’s Regatta the day before!). Ductape, with skipper Jeff Thomas and Missy Baskervill, came closely behind with two second places. The second, almost 2 hour 30 minute race, came down to only 11 seconds between the two boats. Sayuri took two third places, with Bifrost placing fourth both races rounding out the non-spinnaker fleet.

For the spinnaker classes, a similar result happened with all four boats placing the same for each race. Devil Dog won both races handily, posting an almost identical corrected time difference over Blueprint, who came in with two second places. EZ and Esprit Libre made some good improvements on their times in the longer second race and got two third places and two fourth places, respectively. Devil Dog has since taken a hit in its PHRF rating (from 135 to 129) and we’ll see how they can hold up for the rest of the season.

Once again, it was a beautiful day for sailboat racing, and with the exception of the Hatteras which nearly ran over the pin end of the line while boats were in a starting sequence, it was almost perfect. We enjoyed having everyone out and are looking forward to some more great racing coming up for the Parrothead (essentially a drag race between New Bern and Oriental with a big raft-up social afterwards) on July 3.
