March 2004 Issue

There was a great turn out for the Commodore's Ball after the race on Saturday night. As usual, Jenny Hamilton-Thomas did a great job arranging the festivities and coordinating the event which was held at the Chelsea in New Bern.

The 2004 Crew of the Year Award went to Joe Valinotti for his tireless efforts at keeping Blue Bayou afloat and still very competitive. Blue has been a proud racer for many years and Joe deserves a lot of credit for that.

The 2004 Sportsman of the Year Award went to our vice commodore Bill Jarvis. Bill sacrificed his time, provided a committee boat, and asked the regular crew on Piccolo to take a year off in order to be the Principal Race Officer for NYRA this year. His knowledge of racing, calm control, and
organizational skills made every race a pleasure to sail. He also brought those same skills to the NYRA board meetings to help keep us all on track.

From all of the members of NYRA, congratulations to both Joe and Bill.

Finally, the outgoing Board would like to thank Mark and Jeanne Brennesholtz for their contribution as news letter editors, to Jenny Hamilton-Thomas and Janice Peterson for their help on the after race events, and to Ken Gurganus and Joni Floyd for their help on the water during the races.
I especially would like to thank Missy Baskerville for her efforts as commodore. She has done a great job and is handing over a very healthy club for the new board to lead.

Don't forget that 2004 Membership applications are on line at www.nyra.org and get your boats and crews ready for the first ICRC event which will be the Clark Cup on May 1 and 2. Let's all make sure that NYRA has a winning team to show the PSC and ODC crowd that this is our end of the river.
